Young Canadians aged 17 years and older high school have given 18,339 units of blood in this program - an increase of 34% compared to collections from 2010 to 2011. In addition, the program has grown to 6,873 new donors, an increase of 16%. Donors in this age group accounted for 9% of Canadian donor pool.

These results are promising when we know that the Canadian Blood Services must recruit more than 89,000 new donors this year alone, to meet the growing demand for blood and blood products. Blood for Life is a national recruitment program for young Canadians, which requires the contribution of student leaders in schools to promote with their classmates, the importance of blood donation. Now in its third year, this program provides students the challenge to recruit their teachers, their families and friends to donate blood at a clinic in the CBS.

The winner is the school St. Joseph’s High School in Windsor, Ontario. In addition to recruiting the largest number of donors (317) among the 355 participating schools, this school has also attracted the largest number of new donors, or 127. St. Joseph’s School will receive two prizes of $ 500, with FedEx Express Canada, due to its success in the categories of larger number of new donors and the largest number of donors. This is a second consecutive win in these categories for St. Joseph’s. For a list of all the winners of the challenge 2011 - 2012, please visit at www.blood.ca

This partnership is a natural extension of the stem cell donor “optimal” being a young person aged between 17 and 35 years old, male, from various ethnic groups. Between April and June 2012, 37 schools have participated in information and DNA collection, adding new donors OneMatch.

Activities organized in schools this spring helped recruit 2261 new stem cell donors, exceeding the target of 1,300 new donors OneMatch.

“We are very pleased to see the importance of the contribution of young people across the country to the blood supply chain in Canada, says Sue Blasutti, executive director of donor services and collections management. And, especially this year, while CBS needs more than 89,000 new donors to meet the growing demand for blood and blood components in Canada. Blood for Life contributes significantly to achieving this goal. '

The contribution will help FedEx CBS over the next two years to provide promotional materials and prize money to participating schools.
