Safe Kids Worldwide, Shanghai Municipal Center for Diseases Control and Prevention, and FedEx Express Join Efforts to Promote Child Pedestrian Safety

SHANGHAI, Jan. 24, 2008—Safe Kids Worldwide, a global non-profit organization, today joined hands with the Shanghai Municipal Center for Diseases Control and Prevention (SCDC) and FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corporation (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, in hosting the “Pilot Child Pedestrian Safety Intervention Program Seminar” at Shanghai Haitong Primary School. A child pedestrian safety needs assessment performed for the Pudong Huamu area was presented at the seminar. FedEx volunteers educated the Haitong Primary School students about pedestrian safety through lively games.

According to a report from Safe Kids Worldwide, road accidents have become the second largest killer of children aged 14 and below in China. An average of more than 30,000 children are injured or killed in traffic accidents every year. Of these, nearly 44 percent are child pedestrians. The report suggests that careless road-crossing is the largest cause of road injury.

The Huamu community need assessment reveals that students have difficulty recognizing traffic signs. The major risks they face while walking to school is that the sidewalks are often obstructed by vehicles, garbage and small vendors, which can lead to them walking in the road. The traffic signs near the schools are absent or unclear, and the crosswalks are not user-friendly. All these issues pose a threat to child pedestrians. “A relevant intervention scheme will be developed based upon the assessment results and will be expanded to the entire city after trial run in the Huamu area,” said Feng Xiaogang, director of the School Health Department of SCDC.

“FedEx is very proud to join the Child Pedestrian Safety Promotion Program and support the Huamu community needs assessment,” said Ricky Liu, managing director of operations, domestic service, FedEx China. “FedEx has long been committed to supporting child pedestrian safety education. We not only deliver fast and reliable service in China, but also care about the community where we live and work. As a corporate citizen, we will continue our cooperation with Safe Kids Worldwide and relevant government agencies to help prevent road traffic accidents.”
“Community assessment is a good tool, which enables us to create tailor-made traffic accident prevention programs and better utilize resources, which in the end, makes our injury prevention efforts more helpful to the kids who live in this community,” said Monica Cui, director, Safe Kids China. FedEx has worked closely with Safe Kids Worldwide over the past years to promote safety awareness for children all over the world. Since the company began its relationship with Safe Kids China in April 2004, it has sponsored safety education for more than a million students through in-school programs throughout the country. More than 600 FedEx employees have devoted their time to work together with teachers to educate students about road safety through interesting games and demonstrations, and to create a safer environment for child pedestrians around the schools.
