Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today commended the efforts of FedEx to support Hurricane Sandy disaster relief efforts by delivering generators, food, water and ice to nursing homes, shelters, first responders and other relief organizations throughout the lower Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island.

“Charitable efforts from the private sector like those of FedEx are more than welcome as our communities work to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy,” Governor Cuomo said. “Since day one of this disaster, FedEx has been helping to deliver critical items to New Yorkers in need quickly and immediately after the storm, and I thank them for their generous service.”

In response to Hurricane Sandy, FedEx deployed several of its local fleet of delivery trucks, tractor trailers and other vehicles to deliver vital items such as water and dry ice and more than 85 much-needed generators to shelters, nursing homes, fire departments, municipalities and critical infrastructure protecting water supplies throughout the downstate region including Nassau, Orange, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. In addition, FedEx delivered a massive 500-kilowatt generator to LaGuardia Airport to support its efforts to clean-up and resume operations.

The FedEx operating companies have also been transporting critical items including more than 23,000 MREs (Meals, Ready-to-Eat) from Oneida County as well as a large generator and hundreds of traffic devices, such as orange barrels and barricades, on a 53-foot trailer to a major emergency response staging area at Citi Field in Queens.

The delivery of these items continues to support relief efforts throughout the downstate region, helping to meet the basic needs of New Yorkers impacted by the hurricane such as food, heat, and running, clean water.

“FedEx is proud to be able to support the relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy,” said Frederick W. Smith, chairman, president and CEO of FedEx Corp. “Our team members have always risen to the call when disaster strikes, and we’re honored to lend a helping hand to our friends in the northeast.”
