MIAMI, Dec. 4, 2008 – The Trust for the Americas, affiliate of the Organization of American States (OAS), recognized FedEx with an Honorable Mention at the 2008 Corporate Citizen of the Americas Award ceremony in Washington, D.C. on November 20. FedEx received the honor for its FedEx PyMEx Membership Program, which helps educate small and medium-size businesses in Latin America on exporting and global trade. The awards were presented by OAS Secretary General Jose Miguel Insulza.

The FedEx PyMEx Membership Program was first implemented in Mexico in 2004, and today has 1,478 members across nine Latin American countries. Providing free educational seminars, consulting services, online tools and a host of other benefits, the program assists small and medium-size businesses—which make up more than 90% of all businesses in the region—with the resources to help them understand exporting and the fundamentals of competing in the global marketplace.

“We are very proud to receive this recognition for a program that aims to provide small and medium-size businesses with access to new markets,” said Mike Murkowski, vice president, Marketing, FedEx Express Latin America and Caribbean division, who received the Honorable Mention at the awards ceremony. “And, I commend the Trust for the Americas for highlighting the important role that the private sector plays in improving the communities we serve,” he added.

The Corporate Citizen of the Americas Award recognizes a company that has initiated an innovative program that benefits the community in which it operates and that can serve as a model for socially-responsible practices. Each year, a Selection Committee comprised of distinguished leaders from both the public and private sector selects one winner and two honorable mentions for the award.
