With summer fast approaching, many Bostonians look forward to beating the heat with ice cream galore at the 28th annual Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl, presented by FedEx. For the third consecutive year, FedEx is proud to serve as presenting sponsor of this three-day ice cream festival that benefits the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and one of the leading cancer research and care centers in the United States.

With help from ten top ice cream and gelato companies, nearly 200 FedEx team members from across the Greater Boston community will volunteer to deliver hope and support for children and adults with cancer. FedEx volunteers will scoop more than 30 flavors of ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet and gelato across the 3 days. Proceeds from Scooper Bowl support cancer research and care for more than 300,000 patients treated annually at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. With the help of corporate supporters and ice cream lovers, the Scooper Bowl has raised over $2.65 million.

The 2010 Scooper Bowl will kick off with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony held at Boston’s City Hall Plaza on June 8. Joe Zingarelli, 24-year veteran of FedEx and a FedEx Express station operations manager, will serve as this year’s FedEx ambassador with his family during the festival. One of his sons, Joey, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 14 and successfully treated at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Today, he is a healthy 19-year-old and looks forward to enjoying this week’s festivities with his family.

The opening ceremony will include the Mayor of Boston, Thomas Menino; Director of the Jimmy Fund, Suzanne Fountain; and a patient representative from the Jimmy Fund Clinic. Some of the Boston Red Sox player’s wives will judge an ice cream eating contest and scoop ice cream.

FedEx volunteers will also make a special delivery to bring a taste of Scooper Bowl to patients and staff at the Jimmy Fund Clinic, a division of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute dedicated to pediatric cancer research and treatment.
