MANILA, August 5, 2019 – FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company, and Safe Kids Worldwide Philippines (SKWP) recently announced the 2019 Young Road Safety Champion during the annual celebration of National Safe Kids Week.

FedEx Express Philippines Managing Director John Peterson underscored FedEx commitment to children’s road safety during the 12th National Safe Kids Week, with the theme “Safe Journey—Safe Kids”.

In the Philippines, FedEx supports two programs dedicated to training children in the basics of road safety.

Launched in 2004, the Young Road Safety Advocate Program is a peer-to-peer initiative where fifth and sixth graders help train younger children about proper pedestrian behavior. The Young Road Safety Champion honor is awarded to the most effective student-mentor. The 2019 awardee is Jake Russel Tumampos of San Dionisio Elementary School.

To date, the Young Road Safety Advocate Program has reached nearly 30 schools in key cities in the country including Quezon City, Paranaque, Cebu, and Angeles.

Also awarded during the celebrations was the 2019 International Walk to School Best Idea which is given to the school with the most creative way to promote road safety in communities. San Dionisio Elementary School won Best Idea for their innovative use of social media in promoting road safety. Over 8,900 students, 315 teachers, 182 parents, and 82 non-teaching personnel participated in the campaign.

The International Walk to School is part of the Walk This Way program that FedEx supports in 10 countries.
