FedEx named ‘official carrier’ of the Big Egg Hunt 2013

LONDON, 12 February, 2013 – FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, has been named the official carrier of the Big Egg Hunt 2013. Teaming up with Action for Children, one of the UK’s leading children’s charities, FedEx is responsible for the safe transportation of 101 oversized eggs, created by leading artists and designers, to five city locations across the UK.

Helping take the Big Egg Hunt on tour this Easter, FedEx is providing two articulated lorries to provide the safe arrival of this unusual and very valuable cargo. Newly introduced to the FedEx UK fleet, this 13.6m long, 4.88m high double decker articulated vehicle uses the latest transportation technology, incorporating state-of-the-art LED lighting and operating systems. FedEx has purchased 30 new double deckers so far this year.

Travelling between Covent Garden, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow, before later returning this valuable shipment to London, two members of the FedEx UK training department will be transporting the eggs for 2,500 miles in total. The vehicles are built to transport a wide variety of shipments, making FedEx the ideal carrier.

As part of this programme, FedEx employees will volunteer their time, skills and fundraising efforts around the country. In addition to being the official carrier, FedEx will be conducting its own fundraising initiative. Using a smaller FedEx branded egg to raise money internally to support the charity, it will be sending the egg from depot to depot for FedEx staff to guess the mileage, once its journey is complete.

Mark Shaw, a member of the FedEx in-house driver training team, says: “The new double decker articulated vehicles are the perfect fit for this job. They have an internal length moving deck, allowing it to be lowered and raised so both levels can be filled – helping reduce mileage and fuel used. With cargo of this kind, we need to ensure the content is expertly packed so that even delicate or fragile goods can be transported safely.”

FedEx has supported Action for Children more than three years with employees across the UK giving their time. “We’re not only proud of our staff’s involvement in this event but are proud of their engagement in the many other charity events throughout the year across the UK,” says Trevor Hoyle, Managing Director of Ground Operations UK & Ireland for FedEx Express and FedEx UK Ltd.

“At FedEx we measure our corporate social responsibility not in terms of the size of the donations we make but by the level of our employee engagement – with incredible dedication, testament to the generous spirit of its employees.”
