FedEx Helps Save Newborn Lives by Providing Free Shipment of Neonatal Equipment

Ho Chi Minh City, June 20, 2011 – FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company and a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and Vina Capital Foundation joined forces today for a visit to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the Da Nang Women and Children’s Hospital. Representatives from both organizations viewed neo-natal equipment that FedEx shipped free of charge from Germany, which will help save the lives of many newborn babies.

The new equipment puts Da Nang on a par with similar NICUs in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and one step closer to bringing international-standard care to newborns in Central Vietnam.

During their visit, FedEx representatives toured the hospital and also met some of the newborn babies and gave encouragement to their families. The visit was part of an ongoing program by FedEx to support the local communities in which it operates.

“At FedEx, we are delighted to support international and local organizations that contribute to the welfare of communities,” said Binh Nguyen, Senior Manager, FedEx Express, Vietnam and Indochina. “The work of Survive to Thrive will make a huge difference to the future of many new lives in this part of Vietnam, and it is wonderful to see this meaningful project in action.”

“Da Nang has made great strides in reducing its infant mortality in recent years, and with the dedication of the city’s excellent doctors, and the support of FedEx, ‘Survive to Thrive’ aims to reduce that rate even further,” said Mrs. Robin King Austin, Executive Director of VinaCapital Foundation. .

Present at the visit to the NICU at Da Nang’s women’s and children’s hospital were: Mr. Nguyen Duy Binh, Senior Manager of Indochina, Chief Representative of FedEx Vietnam; and Mimi Vu, Vina Capital Foundation.

The design, construction and outfitting of the NICU was funded through “Survive to Thrive” (STT), an initiative of the VinaCapital Foundation, which aims to reduce infant mortality in Vietnam and to make the NICU at the Da Nang Women and Children’s Hospital a centre of regional excellence.

FedEx has supported a number of VinaCapital Foundation’s humanitarian projects in the last few years including “Heartbeat Vietnam”, for which it funded live-saving heart operations for 16 children, and “FedEx Delivers Heartbeats”, a mobile medical clinic program which brings medical care to children in rural communities.
