, March 21, 2012—- Children on their way to a school in Seoul will soon have a safer and easier time getting there as traffic and road markings get redesigned and upgraded.

FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, in conjunction with Safe Kids, a global network of organizations promoting child safety, is launching the ‘Model School Zone Project.’ The first location will be the Kumsan Elementary school in Seoul.

The initial improvements for the Model School Zone Project involve installing additional traffic signs and upgrading existing road markings to make conditions safer for children walking to and from Kumsan Elementary school. Special safety sessions for children, teachers, and parents will also be held to increase awareness of how environmental conditions affect pedestrian safety.

“Safety is the number one priority at FedEx, and our desire is to spread this value throughout the community,” said Ms. Eun-Mi Chae, managing director of FedEx Korea. “We are today proud to expand upon our long-running Walk This Way collaboration with SafeKids. Our hope is this effort will inspire schools towards the goal of creating safer environments for young pedestrians.”

A school zone safety committee formed by Safe Kids, FedEx Korea, safety experts, and school and government officials chose Kumsan Elementary School based on traffic accident records, field studies, and parent surveys. Additional schools selected for the project will be announced in the coming months.

The Model School Zone Project was initiated by FedEx Korea and Safe Kids under the ‘Walk This Way’ global campaign to promote child pedestrian safety worldwide The initiative is part of the United Nation’s Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011 – 2020.

During their partnership on the ‘Walk This Way’ campaign, Safe Kids and FedEx Korea have conducted a number of safety promoting activities together including child education sessions, the distribution of teaching materials at community centers and schools, and special initiatives like the ‘Drive Under 30km/h Speed Limit in School Zones’ program.

(Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020)’ 캠페인을 지지하기 위한 것이다.
