BANGALORE, Sept. 22, 2011—Team members across FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company and a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX), energetically participated in the seventh annual FedEx Cares Week, which kicked off globally in the week of September 12, 2011.

The international volunteer campaign provided FedEx team members across the organization with valuable opportunities to give back to the local communities where they live and work. Last year alone, close to 4,000 FedEx employees donated approximately 20,000 hours of community service. With five new countries (India, Italy, Switzerland, Spain and United Arab Emirates) joining the campaign this year, FedEx Cares Week drew even more team member participation.

In India, more than 450 FedEx employees participated in blood donation and tree planting activities in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad in celebration of FedEx Cares Week. The employees donated over 144 litres of blood and planted over 90 trees at a wildlife sanctuary in Delhi and at city schools in Mumbai and Bangalore, where school children also joined in the activity.

FedEx Cares Week originated in the United States in 2005. Since its launch, the campaign has become a truly global event with volunteer activities taking place in as many as 40 countries and territories. Coinciding with the European Year of Volunteering, FedEx Cares Week in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) region will feature volunteer activities in Belgium, France, Germany, India, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. The week offers team members diverse ways to lend a helping hand to those in need such as:

  • Supporting local children’s hospitals by painting child-friendly spaces, offering staff support at events and donating children’s books and art materials

  • Assisting in the sale of products benefitting individuals and children with rare or long term diseases

  • Cleaning local parks, beach fronts and river banks to help keep communities green

  • Organizing blood donation drives

  • Donating school supplies

  • Renovating gardens and redecorating living spaces to help organizations benefitting children with diverse needs

  • Participating in a spinning marathon to support local associations serving the homeless

“FedEx Cares Week demonstrates the remarkable commitment of our people. Our team members are passionate about improving the world they live in. Day in and day out, FedEx team members enthusiastically work to find the right solutions for our customers. With FedEx Cares Week, our team members extend that same spirit of camaraderie and passion for excellence in service to the community,” said Andrew Self, vice president, Marketing and Communications, FedEx Express EMEA, “Without a doubt, our people remain at heart of every FedEx success and I applaud them for the wealth of energy they bring to our invigorating workplace culture.”

The volunteer activities are complemented by a team member donation drive across the EMEA region in support of UNICEF’s relief effort in the Horn of Africa. The company recently donated two B-777 relief aid flights of food assistance from Paris, France to Nairobi, Kenya. The charitable initiative was organized in collaboration with UNICEF with the aim of offering life-saving assistance to severely malnourished children in south and central Somalia.
