Brussels, Belgium, September 13, 2007 – FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, announced today its plans to build a regional headquarters for Europe, Middle East, Indian subcontinent and Africa in La Hulpe, Belgium. The building will be designed by Mr. André Jacqmain, a leading Belgian architect.
This announcement follows the decision by the Collège Municipal of La Hulpe to grant FedEx a permit to begin construction on the project. Robert W. Elliott, President of FedEx Express, Europe, Middle East, Indian subcontinent and Africa said:
“After a rather exhaustive search, we
believe we have found the perfect location for our campus-like headquarters in La Hulpe. It is centrally located in Europe, allows us to retain our Belgian employees, has access to international and public transportation connections and has a commercially zoned site set in natural surroundings. Additionally we have been operating in Belgium for 23 years, and I think it is a great place to do business.”
Continuing, Mr. Elliott added, “In construction of the building, we will be utilising the most advanced technology to ensure optimum energy savings and conservation. It has been specifically designed to respect and be in harmony with the environment.”
The move to La Hulpe will allow FedEx to consolidate its headquarters which are currently split between three sites in Belgium. It will facilitate communication among departments and improve overall efficiency as well as providing adequate office, meeting and training space. The planned relocation will involve about 600 personnel encompassing office staff and the company’s senior management. The company’s logistics operations personnel will remain in Antwerp, Ghent, Liège, and Melsbroek.
FedEx has been and will continue to work closely with the Walloon regional government and all relevant public authorities in the development of the facility. Commenting on FedEx decision to relocate to the Walloon region, Jean-Claude Marcourt, Minister of Economic Affairs, Employment, Trade and Patrimony for the Walloon region said
