FedEx Employees go Wild for a Good Cause During FedEx Cares Week

Singapore, Sept. 30, 2011—FedEx Express (FedEx) employees in Singapore swapped their day jobs for a ‘walk on the wild side’ recently, with the aim of creating greater awareness for nature and the environment.

As part of the express transportation company’s global community service campaign, FedEx Cares Week, FedEx employees in Singapore were trained as nature guides by Singapore Nature Society experts before they led a group of FedEx employees and their families on a nature tour at Sensory Trail on Pulau Ubin. Later this year, these FedEx guides will conduct tours of the Sensory Trail for upper primary school students on financial assistance. The guided tour program was just one of a series of activities undertaken by FedEx Singapore volunteers as part of the FedEx Cares Week, held from September 17-25.

On September 11, FedEx volunteers in Singapore took part in the FedEx Beach Cleanup, where FedEx employees and family members carried out a coastal clean up, removing trash and debris at the beach area in Pasir Ris Park.

Lastly, as an extension of FedEx Cares Week, FedEx Singapore employees also took part in Jeans for Dreams, where they make a donation in return for the chance to dress casual every Friday in September. All proceeds from the donation will go to the Children Cancer Foundation.

“I have participated in the FedEx Cares Week for the last four years. This year, the coastal clean-up of the Pasir Ris beach area was especially meaningful to me as my five year old son, Zephan joined me. The coastal clean-up enhanced his awareness about the environment and to cut down on the amount of waste that we usually generate,” said Loo Sook Yong, a FedEx Singapore associate account executive.

“That day, Zephan found a 50-cent coin during while cleaning the beach and I suggested to him to donate the coin in support of FedEx Singapore “Jeans for Dreams” project. I shared that with him how mummy has donated $25 to help support the needs of families with children suffering from cancer. He then asked if he could donate $50 from his savings to support the cause. I am so proud of Zephan! And I am proud of my company, FedEx, for its commitment to corporate responsibility and providing volunteering opportunities for the FedEx team and our families,” she added.

FedEx Cares Week in the Asia Pacific region consists of activities in 12 markets, including Australia, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam and is part of a global FedEx initiative involving almost 4,000 employees around the world.

FedEx Cares Week activities have a strong environmental focus. This year, about 1,000 FedEx volunteers across the region supported 35 local organizations in a range of community activities, including tree planting, gardening, and environmental protection education sessions for children. Other projects include childcare activities, visits to elderly centers, and donations of books and stationary. (See Appendix for detailed local programs).

“FedEx Cares Week is a global show of unity and a demonstration of our continued dedication to the local communities in which we do business. Sustainability is a common social concern across Asia. We are continuing to build environmental responsibility into our daily business practices and our employee volunteers are actively engaged in instilling eco-awareness at the grass roots level in their local communities to help improve quality of life,” said David L. Cunningham Jr., president, FedEx Express Asia Pacific.

Since FedEx Cares Week first launched in the U.S. in 2005, it has expanded to more than 40 countries and territories around the globe. This year, FedEx Cares Week will be celebrated in the U.S. from September 12-18 and debut in Canada, Spain, Italy, India, the UAE and Switzerland. Together, FedEx volunteers around the world will donate a combined 20,000 hours to serving local organizations.
