On Tuesday, FedEx Chairman and CEO Frederick W. Smith received the 2017 America Competes Award from the Council on Competitiveness. The award is presented to an individual whose commitment to advancing U.S. competitiveness spans business, education, and politics, and who seeks to better communities through public leadership and philanthropy.
In his remarks at the event, Mr. Smith identified four keys to U.S. prosperity: dedication to rule of law, commitment to a market-based economy, establishment of a best-in-class education system, and pursuit of open trade.
“Businesses, government, industry experts, educational institutions, labor, and others must come together to support these policies to keep America competitive. History is clear: These are the policies necessary to ensure economic growth and rising incomes for all our citizens, and that’s what made America great in the first place,” said Mr. Smith.
Mr. Smith stressed that to remain the world’s most prosperous nation, the U.S. must pursue policies that foster strong growth and jobs. This includes simplifying taxes, investing in infrastructure, upgrading our K-12 educational system and expanding our community college system, and ensuring global trade remains open.
