HO CHI MINH CITY, November 14, 2016 — FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, today celebrated International Walk to School Month by launching the FedEx – Safe Kids Walk This Way (WTW) program initiatives for fiscal years 2017 to 2020 (June 2016 to May 2020).

Held in collaboration with Safe Kids Vietnam-Asia Injury Prevention (AIP), WTW is a pedestrian safety advocacy program that aims to improve road user behaviors and create safer walking environments for children in Vietnam. The four-year program is comprised of the following initiatives:

  • PHOTOVOICE (FY17: June 2016 to May 2017) – About 28,000 secondary school students from 17 target secondary schools in Ho Chi Minh City will be invited to submit photo entries depicting safe and hazardous road user behaviors from December 2016 to May 2017. Following a judging process, the project will culminate with the awarding of the PHOTOVOICE winner in March or April 2017. The project aims to increase students’ understanding of pedestrian safety by utilizing the photos and reflections from children about road hazards to advocate for improvements in the walking environments around schools.
  • Walk with FedEx (FY18 and FY19: June 2017 to May 2019) – A series of road user safety workshops mentored by FedEx volunteers will bring pedestrian safety education, equipment and materials to 37,000 students at 37 primary schools throughout Districts 5 and 8 in Ho Chi Minh City from October 2017 to May 2018.
  • Safe School Zones (FY18 and FY19: June 2017 to May 2019) – Select primary and secondary schools will undergo infrastructure improvements aimed at creating safer walking areas for students to use.

“Road accidents are the leading cause of fatalities in children ages 5 to 17 years in Vietnam, hence it’s extremely important that we help raise public awareness about this critical issue,” said Dao Toan Thang, senior manager of Indochina and country manager of FedEx Vietnam. “At FedEx, child pedestrian safety is one of our priority advocacies. In Vietnam and across the world, we travel the road networks extensively, so we would like to help ensure that roads are safe for everyone to use through programs like Walk This Way.”

Walk This Way was launched in Vietnam by FedEx and Safe Kids Vietnam-Asia Injury Prevention in 2009 to encourage improvements in road user behaviors among motorists and create safer, more walkable communities for child pedestrians. Since then, the program has reached 224,263 students from 278 primary and secondary schools across the country, installed a 1,700 square meter traffic safety park in Dong Nai Province for primary school students and donated 3,472 helmets, 19,855 reflective jackets and caps, and 93,491 pedestrian safety books to students.
