FedEx and Safe Kids China Continue “Slow Down for Kids” Campaign and Advocate Being Responsible Drivers

BEIJING, May 11, 2012 — FedEx Express and Safe Kids China today hosted the “Slow Down for Kids – Behaving as a Responsible Driver” campaign at a primary school in Haidian District. The campaign, following the initiative launched last May, is part of the United Nations (UN) Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011-2020), which has the goal of increasing public awareness to prevent child pedestrian-related injuries.  An additional objective is to create safer, well-regulated communities in China.
Supported by the Chinese Center of the Disease Control and Prevention (China CDC) and Beijing Haidian District, the event attracted around 200 students and parents along with FedEx volunteers and community workers.  A highlight of the handover ceremony came when a FedEx courier with years of safe driving experience delivered a symbolic key to a parent representative.  Students and parents also learned some basic knowledge on pedestrian safety through on-site driving simulation experiences provided jointly by FedEx and Safe Kids China.  Through the event organizers and participants called on all citizens to become more responsible drivers. 
“As a responsible corporate citizen, FedEx has been actively partnering with Safe Kids Worldwide to promote the Safe Kids Walk This Way program in China for the past eight years, in order to help increase the public awareness of road safety for children.” said Wilson Chung, vice president of International Priority Operations, FedEx China.  “So far, the program has brought pedestrian safety education to 25 cities and more than 2.7 million students in China.  We feel proud of what we have achieved till now.  But with a greater sense of responsibility, FedEx will work more closely with Safe Kids Worldwide to create safer, more walkable communities through efforts such as today’s responsible driving campaign.”
“The prevalence of road safety issues has duly attracted global attention,” said Monica Cui, chief representative and executive director of Safe Kids China.  “It is reported that 720 children are killed due to a traffic accident every day in the world, and about 20,000 children aged below 15 years old are injured or killed in traffic accidents in China annually.  Corresponding to the UN’s Decade of Action for Road Safety, we’ve rolled out a series of activities in the past year with FedEx.  Only through increased awareness of this critical situation can we together increase safety and prevent road injuries.”
FedEx and Safe Kids China will continue to shoulder the responsibility of educating people regarding road safety around the country to help save children’s lives and reduce the incidents of road strategies.
