Dong Nai Province, Feb. 22, 2012—FedEx Express, one of the world’s largest express transportation companies and a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX), and the Asia Injury Prevention (AIP) Foundation/Safe Kids Vietnam have marked their continuing commitment to improved pedestrian safety awareness at schools in Dong Nai Province with a ceremony to launch the ‘Walk This Way’ program at Nguyen Tri Phuong primary school.
The program will help improve the walking environment around Nguyen Tri Phuong School—one of the schools in Dong Nai province with a particularly high record of traffic accidents involving students. As part of the program, traffic lights, rumble strips, a zebra crossing and traffic signs have been installed in front of the school and on national highway 1A which the majority of students must cross on foot to access the school.
Besides helping to improve the walking environment,some 700 reflective jackets were also distributed to pupils to protect them when travelling to and from home. In addition,to make it easier for pupils to practice their pedestrian skills in a secure setting, a traffic safety corner was installed in the school grounds complete withfour sets of working traffic lights. Volunteers from FedEx helped paint a traffic intersection on the ground and also assisted with a traffic safety-training workshop.
In addition to these activities at Nguyen Tri Phuong Primary school, AIP/Safekids Vietnam and FedEx have distributed 22,000 pedestrian booklets and teacher tools and organized pedestrian safety training workshops for 62 school management boards and core teachers from 32 schools in TrangBom District, Dong Nai province.
“This project highlights our continued commitment to help achieve greater traffic safety for pedestrians in Vietnam, especially in Dong Nai province, a particularly high risk area for traffic accident fatalities. This time we placed our focus on giving away traffic safety materials, holding educational training sessions and implementing engineering solutions for pedestrian safety surrounding Nguyen Tri Phuong School and we look forward to our continuing involvement in meeting the social needs of the local communities here,” said Nguyen DuyBinh, senior country manager, Indochina, and head representative of FedEx Vietnam.
As part of its commitment to supporting the communities in which it works, FedEx has worked with Safe Kids Vietnam to conduct the Walk This Way campaign in Vietnam since December 2009.In 2010, a Traffic Safety Park and ‘Click on Safety’ -e-learning program were launched at Quang Bien Primary school, TrangBom District, Dong Nai province with more than 1,000 students, teachers and representatives from other primary schools in TrangBomDistrict in attendance.In October 2011 FedEx and the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation started to expand Walk This Way in the north of Vietnam by launching the Click on Safety e-Learning program at XuanTrung Primary School, NamDinh province.
