FedEx and AIP/Safe Kids Complete Handover of Model Safe School Zones in Ho Chi Minh City

Program Facilitated Enhancements in Phuoc Thanh Primary School And Long Truong Secondary Schools to Improve Road User Safety for Students

HO CHI MINH CITY, September 22, 2016 – FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, in collaboration with AIP Foundation/Safe Kids Vietnam recently handed over the completed Model Safe School Zones at Phuoc Thanh Primary School and Long Truong Secondary School in District 9, Ho Chi Minh City.

The Model Safe School Zone is a project that facilitated physical enhancements such as the installation of pedestrian lights, sidewalk repairs, crosswalk repainting, and construction of speed bumps to slow down passing traffic around the schools. The program aims to create a safer walking environment and enrich pedestrian skills for over 1,300 students, and help raise awareness about road user safety among the surrounding communities

“At FedEx, helping support the needs of communities where our team members live and work is a vital component of our long-term commitment to Vietnam. We have made child pedestrian safety one of our priority advocacies because it is a critical concern, with road accidents ranking as the leading cause of fatalities in children aged 5 to 17”,[1] said Thang Dao, senior manager of Indochina and country manager of FedEx Vietnam. “We are optimistic that the enhanced pedestrian environment facilitated by the program will enable the students to enjoy safe and worry-free trips walking to and from their schools.”

“Vietnam has one of the highest fatality rates due to road traffic crashes in the Asia Pacific region and ranks 22nd out of 182 countries worldwide[2]. Child pedestrian safety is a concern that is often overlooked, so the Model Safe School Zone program is a proactive step to help reduce road hazards with early interventions.” said Hoang Thi Na Huong, deputy CEO of the AIP Foundation.

FedEx has supported the Walk This Way campaign with Safe Kids in Vietnam since December 2009, reaching more than 224,263 children in 278 schools throughout the country. Following the success of the first Model School Zone launched at Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Primary School in southern Dong Nai Province in 2012, this year’s program has attracted approximately 700 participants composed of students, teachers, parents, community leaders and volunteers throughout areas surrounding schools.
