MANILA, Philippines– FedEx Express, the world’s largest express transportation company, and Safe Kids Worldwide Philippines (SKWP) recently celebrated 2019 International Walk to School Week with the theme ”Safe Journey – Safe Kids”. Students and teachers of Commonwealth Elementary School joined FedEx Express team members in an advocacy walk, mural painting, and crosswalk painting activities.
The Commonwealth Elementary School is situated along Commonwealth Avenue, one of the most dangerous highways in Metro Manila based on the number of road-related injuries[1]. To reduce these incidents, Commonwealth Elementary School has been actively participating in road safety initiatives since 2007.
John Peterson, FedEx Express Philippines Managing Director, led 15 FedEx volunteers and 150 students in interactive activities highlighting the fundamentals of road safety. The repainted crosswalks will benefit over 14,500 students from two schools in the area.
FedEx and Safe Kids launched International Walk to School in the Philippines in 2004. To date, the program has reached over 1.7 million students in over 100 schools in Pasay, Manila, Quezon City, and Angeles, Pampanga.
FedEx sponsors the program in 10 markets around the world including five markets in Asia Pacific and is aligned with FedEx commitment to positively impact 50 million people by the company’s 50th global anniversary in 2023 through five strategic pillars: delivering good, sustainable transportation, employment pathways, global entrepreneurship, and road safety.
