FedEx Completes Student City Support for 2019 School Year

Elementary school students learn the basics about business and the economy through hands-on experiences

TOKYO, March 9, 2020 – FedEx Express (FedEx) completed its Student City support for the 2019 school year between May 2019 and February 2020 with approximately 2,400 fifth grade students. The students were from 35 elementary schools in the Shinagawa-ku district of Tokyo. Students learned the basics about business and the economy through hands-on experience working at businesses including a mock FedEx World Trade Centre.

Student City is an experience-based economic education program provided by Junior Achievement Japan (JA Japan), an organization that educates students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy. In Student City, a town created inside Shinagawa Gakuen elementary school, students play the role of residents and take turns being customers and employees of businesses.

At the mock FedEx office, students assume various employee roles including courier, sales representative, manager and accountant. Students experience the logistics business by selling prepared postcards and international courier services and handling the delivery of goods for other Student City companies. With the goal of being a profitable company, they held numerous meetings to set the price of the postcards and delivery services while considering costs and sales strategies.

Since 2011 FedEx has supported the Student City program. By experiencing work as FedEx employees, the students learn how logistics services help create possibilities for people and businesses. FedEx highlights educational support for young people as one of the key areas of its commitment to global social responsibility. The company has the FedEx Cares 50 by 50 goal, which is to make a positive impact on 50 million people around the world by the company’s 50th anniversary in 2023.
