FedEx Upgrades Largest Station in East China

Boosting Shanghai Logistics Efficiency through Digitization and Automation

FedEx KOWA Station Upgrade

Shanghai, China, May 15, 2026 – Federal Express Corporation (FedEx), one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, has completed a major upgrade of its Chunyun road station in Shanghai. Featuring advanced digital and automation technologies and a redesigned layout, the renovated facility enhances parcel-handling capacity, operational efficiency, and service quality for customers across the city.

As the company’s largest station in East China by area, the Chunyun road station spans 4,400 square meters and can sort up to 3,000 parcels per hour and process an average of nearly 12 tons of freight daily. The facility handles the sorting and delivery of inbound and outbound parcels and freight across parts of Shanghai, working closely with other stations in the city and the Shanghai International Express and Cargo Hub at Pudong International Airport to ensure seamless regional connectivity.

With nearly 240 employees and more than 150 delivery vehicles, the station plays a critical role in supporting customers in healthcare, IT, advanced manufacturing, and cross-border e-commerce, enabling faster and more reliable access to global markets.

Designed as a ‘next-generation’ logistics facility, the upgraded station introduces a modern workplace model that moves beyond traditional fixed workstations. Open, shared office areas foster collaboration and communication, while a self-service secure locker system replaces manual handovers, streamlining equipment and credential management and simplifying couriers’ daily operations.

Guided by the principle of ‘Ground Operations Lead to the Future’, the facility integrates intelligence, safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Digital technologies are embedded throughout the facility, including automated dimension-and-weight capture systems that record parcel size, weight during sorting, significantly improving speed, accuracy and data quality.

Sustainability is a core component of the upgrade. The station now operates more than 50 electric delivery vehicles, raising fleet electrification to over 30%, and is equipped with seven charging stations capable of powering 14 electric vehicles simultaneously. Motion‑sensor lighting has been installed in select office areas to further reduce energy consumption. In addition, building materials synthesized from industrial solid waste have been extensively used for exterior renovations, minimizing resource waste while enabling material recycling.

“As China’s economic center and a vital hub for international trade, Shanghai plays a strategic role in the company’s global network,” said Buay Beng Tan, Vice President of Operations, FedEx China. “This latest enhancement reflects our ongoing investment in infrastructure and network optimization. By embedding digital and automated solutions and creating a more collaborative workplace, we are strengthening ground-air coordination across East China and enabling teams to respond swiftly to customer needs while supporting the growth of Shanghai and China’s foreign trade.”

This latest investment reinforces the company’s long-term commitment to enabling U.S. and global small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to access China’s market, while also helping Chinese businesses connect with customers and opportunities around the world.
