FedEx Express (FedEx), the world’s largest express transportation company and a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NTSE: FDX), was officially registered by the Osaka Prefectural Government on October 30 as an “Osaka Prefecture Superior Disabled Support Company”.
The Osaka Prefecture Disabled Support Company registration system recognizes companies that actively implement hiring and employment support initiatives targeting disabled people. FedEx has an established record of hiring employees with disabilities both in Japan and other countries. Within Osaka, the company was highly regarded for its hiring and support of disabled employees at its North Pacific Regional Hub (within Kansai International Airport), which began operations this past April.
FedEx is a company founded on a people-first philosophy based on promoting diversity in the workplace and the idea of “People-Service-Profit” (PSP). Diversity at FedEx is not simply about having employees work alongside those with disabilities, but promoting understanding of diversity amongst all employees and accepting a wide range of working styles. FedEx makes use of each person’s strong points and assists with weak points to enhance an atmosphere of mutual respect.
About the initiative at FedEx North Pacific Regional Hub
When operations at the FedEx North Pacific Regional Hub began, FedEx established a cleaning team made up solely of disabled employees. FedEx understands the importance of support in the workplace and prepared an environment to enable these team members to succeed. This included support from fellow employees who are certified by the Japan Organization for Employment of the Elderly, Persons with Disabilities and Job Seekers (JEED). From an equipment perspective, the team members use general cleaning tools that are easy to handle and wear highly visible uniforms since they work in areas with moving cargo vehicles. Apart from this cleaning team, the company is promoting a working environment at the hub where other disabled persons can perform jobs suited to their capabilities, such as internal mail collection and delivery, filing, data entry and respond customers via email.
