NAKHON RATCHASIMA, April 30, 2013—FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, is celebrating FedEx 40th anniversary with a Global Month of Service. On April 27 and 28, FedEx organized a tree-planting event at Khao Yai National Park in Thailand. Some 50 FedEx employees from FedEx stations nationwide volunteered to plant 400 small- and medium-sized trees in Thailand’s largest national park. Their hard work contributed significantly to a Khao Yai National Park reforestation project designed to protect 800 of the park’s endangered fauna varieties.
“We are proud to have supported the Global Month of Service in conjunction with FedEx 40th anniversary in a ‘hands-on way that helps make a difference,” said David Carden, managing director, FedEx Express Thailand and Indochina. “Our tree-planting will help revive deforested land to provide more protection for endangered trees and plants in the park. More trees will also help counter the impact of climate change because forests, as “carbon sinks,” absorb carbon emissions.”
The tree-planting program is a collaborative project with non-profit organization, Plant A Tree Today Foundation, which addresses Thailand’s alarming rate of deforestation through tree planting and seedling growth initiatives.
Much of the deforestation in Thailand has occurred in the last 50 years and today, only 33 percent of Thailand’s original forest land remains. In 1973, forests accounted for 30.01 percent of the region’s land mass; today, the figure is 16.38 percent. According to research conducted by the Forest Land Management Bureau, the hardest-hit region is Northeast Thailand where the Khao Yai National Park is located.
The activity is part of the FedEx EarthSmart Outreach program, which encourages employees to contribute to the community in environmentally-focused ways. The Kao Yai National Park tree planting was the third FedEx EarthSmart Outreach program involving FedEx employee volunteers in Thailand. Last year, similar volunteer projects were held in Pra Pradaeng, Samut Prakarn and Mae Na Pak in Chiang Mai.
