In the heart of Vietnam, where the spirit of resilience meets the promise of education, FedEx is working tirelessly to create a positive impact to the lives of young learners through its “Bring Smiles to the Hearts” program. Being in its sixth year collaborating with local non-profit VinaCapital Foundation (VCF) on the program, this year’s initiative aims to refurbish rundown schools and provide children with safe, engaging environments to learn and grow. The urgency of this mission became even more pronounced following the devastation caused by Typhoon Yagi in September 2024, which left many schools in Northern Vietnam in ruins.
The collaboration between FedEx and VCF epitomizes the power of collaboration in addressing social issues. VCF, dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged children in Vietnam, shares FedEx’s vision of enhancing educational opportunities. Together, they have launched two impactful projects aimed at revitalizing two kindergartens - Hoa Mai Kindergarten in Tra Vinh (Mekong Delta) and Gia Sang Kindergarten in Thai Nguyen (Northern Vietnam) which was hit by the typhoon.
Typhoon Yagi’s impact in Northern Thailand Vietnam was catastrophic. More than 800 schools across 26 provinces suffered severe structural damage, leaving over 2 million children without a place to learn [1]. Recognizing the urgent need for action, FedEx and VCF mobilized their resources to refurbish Gia Sang Kindergarten which involved repairing classrooms and creating safe, inviting playgrounds that foster creativity and play.
“At FedEx, we believe that every child deserves access to a safe and nurturing environment where they can learn, grow, and thrive,” said Ms. Ee-Hui Tan, Managing Director of FedEx Vietnam and Cambodia, “This project goes beyond physical improvements; it is about creating a sense of belonging and pride for the children, parents, and teachers. By revitalizing these kindergartens, we are offering opportunities for children to learn, play, and dream in an environment that inspires and supports them. We want every child who walks through the doors of Hoa Mai Kindergarten and Gia Sang Kindergarten to feel encouraged and supported, knowing that they are valued and have our unwavering support”.
This initiative goes beyond mere repairs: it aims to restore a sense of normalcy and hope for children who have faced significant challenges. Each renovated classroom at the two kindergartens is filled with new furniture and learning materials, while playgrounds are transformed into vibrant spaces for play and social interaction. By creating a safe and engaging environment, FedEx and VCF are ensuring that children can focus on their education and personal development.
Ms. Tran Ngoc Trang, Vice Chairman of the Association for the Protection of People with Disabilities and Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin in Tra Vinh Province shared: “This program can help enhance the quality and education that meets the needs of children in acquiring knowledge and fostering creativity. It also aligns with our commitment to support our next generation, contributing to the sustainable social development of Vietnamese youth and ensuring that every child is taken care of.”
Ms. Ha Thi Don, Principal of Hoa Mai Kindergarten expressed her gratitude, “Thanks to the support from FedEx and VCF, our kindergarten has undergone a remarkable transformation. The newly refurbished classrooms and playground now boasts a clean and airy environment, offering our students a safe and comfortable space to learn and play.”
The impact of the “Bring Smiles to the Hearts” program is profound. It not only physically rebuilds schools but also revitalizes the spirits of children and their communities. As children return to their newly refurbished classrooms, their faces light up with joy and excitement. The initiative has become a symbol of hope, demonstrating that even in the face of adversity, support and compassion can lead to positive change. FedEx employees in Vietnam have been integral to the success of this initiative, volunteering their time and skills alongside local communities. Their hands-on involvement in refurbishment projects fosters a strong sense of connection between the employees and the children they are helping. This engagement not only enhances the overall impact of the program but also enriches the volunteers’ experience, as they witness the direct impact of their contributions.
The collaboration between FedEx and VCF marks a long-term commitment to doing good. It is a testament to what can be achieved when like-minded organizations unite for a common cause. As they continue to expand the “Bring Smiles to the Hearts” program, their focus remains on sustainable development and long-term support for youth empowerment in Vietnam. By investing in efforts to support underserved communities, they are paving the way for a brighter future for the children of Vietnam.
Through this initiative, FedEx demonstrates that education is a powerful tool for positive change. With every classroom restored and every playground revitalized, they are reminding the children of Vietnam that they are valued, their dreams are important, and they have a community that believes in their potential. Together, we can make a difference – one smile at a time.
