Guangzhou, May 17, 2023 – FedEx Express (FedEx), a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Guangzhou Municipal Government, forming an in-depth strategic collaboration.

Under the MOU, FedEx and the Guangzhou Municipal Government will fully cooperate on customs clearance, cross-border e-commerce, and the establishment of South China Operations Center. The two sides will jointly promote FedEx strategy and business development in Guangzhou, expand e-commerce logistic services, and support Guangzhou’s development as an international cargo hub.

In recent years, Guangzhou has continuously optimized its trading structure and elevated its contributions to trade. The city’s total value of imports and exports has repeatedly reached new heights. In 2022, the total value amounted to 1.09 trillion RMB with an increase of 1.1% year-on-year, accounting for 13.2% of foreign trade in Guangdong Province1. In the first quarter of 2023, the total value reached 467.43 billion RMB, accounting for 25.6% of provincial foreign trade2. As a new form of business in foreign trade, cross-border e-commerce is growing rapidly. Since Guangzhou became a cross-border e-commerce pilot city in 2013, its scale of import and exports in cross-border e-commerce has had a 93-fold increase3, and reached 137.59 billion RMB in 2022, exceeding the 100 billion threshold for the first time4.

“We are pleased to deepen our strategic collaboration with Guangzhou Municipal Government. We have actively intensified collaboration with local governments and partners to more efficiently connect Chinese enterprises with the global market, contributing to the increase of China’s exports and imports,” said Eddy Chan, senior vice president of FedEx Express and president of FedEx China. “Through the strategic collaboration with Guangzhou Municipal Government, FedEx will be able to better meet customer needs, improve custom clearance efficiency, connect our customers in Guangzhou and southern China more efficiently to global markets, and further promote the development of small- and medium-sized enterprises and cross-border e-commerce.”

The FedEx APAC Hub is located at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport. Since its initiation in 2009, as a major hub in APAC, the facility currently operates more than 210 international flights per week, providing stronger support for the shipments between China and APAC as well as the global markets. In 2022, FedEx launched an AI-powered sorting robot at the company’s South China E-Commerce Shipment Sorting Center in Guangzhou to handle the ever-growing volumes of e-commerce-related shipments in the region. This was followed by the FedEx announcement that it would expand its Guangzhou Gateway by establishing a new South China Operations Center in Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport.

This in-depth collaboration with the Guangzhou Municipal Government is another example of how FedEx supports the development of global trade. For years, FedEx has served as an advocate for international trade, empowering customers in China to expand their business overseas and gain an advantage in global markets. As the global economy accelerates its pace of recovery, FedEx continues its investment in building new facilities and expanding its network, to connect our customers in China to the world.
